Monday Music News

  • Just a few weeks ago, a stage collapsed during Cheap Trick’s set at the Ottawa Bluesfest, leaving only five people injured in what could have been a much larger disaster. This past weekend, another near miss occurred as The Flaming Lips‘ background video wall fell during a heavy storm in Tulsa, OK, where the Brady District Block Party was taking place. The storm and the collapse ended the show before the band could go on, but fortunately there were no injuries… except Steven Drozd’s guitar and an estimated $800,000 in equipment. Check out the video above.
  • Late last week on his website, Swedish songwriter Jens Leckman posted a new song from his upcoming EP, An Argument With Myself. Listen to it now and be sure to get your tickets for his upcoming show at the Columbia Theater on October 1.

  • Although he’s had it for quite a while, and an image of it (though uncredited) turned up in The Stranger five years ago, the A.V. Club and Pitchfork are circulating stories of Band of Horses drummer Creighton Barrett’s bizarre tattoo. Apparently, the image on his right shoulder depicts a young Will Smith chomping on a bag of Rap Snacks, “the official snack of Hip Hop.” Ridiculous, humorous, or downright tasty — you be the judge.
  • While Portugal. The Man was busy thrilling fans at Lollapalooza this weekend, some crooks were were busy boosting their ride. Gone missing from a parking lot near Grant Park, their red Ford van and black trailer (viewed here) was full of gear, including guitars, vintage amps, pedals, mics, and a whole lot else. You can read a list of missing equipment and reference shots of the van over at Paste. Please contact the band if see any of this gear on the market.
  • Airing tonight on the Travel Channel’s No Reservations, celebrity chef and author Anthony Bourdain spent a week with Queens of the Stone Age at their California studio, hanging out, watching them record, sharing food and stories. QOTSA frontman Josh Homme actually scored the episode. But let’s hope it doesn’t sound like this:

  • Outkast rapper Big Boi was arrested yesterday for four counts of possession. Read about it here.
  • And if you haven’t seen the new, relatively minimalist video for Girls‘ new song “Vomit,” check it out now:
